Definition: Comoros from Philip's Encyclopedia

(Comores) Independent republic off the E coast of Africa between Mozambique and Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, made up of a group of volcanic islands. The three major islands are Grande Comore (site of the capital, Moroni), Anjouan, and Mohéli. The islands are mountainous, the climate tropical, and the soil fertile. Coconuts, copra, vanilla, cocoa, and sisal are the main crops and exports. France owned the islands between 1841 and 1909. They gained their independence in 1975. Area: 2235sq km (863sq mi). Pop. (2000 est.) 633,000.
