Lara, Brian (Charles)

West Indian cricketer. A left-handed batsman who has played cricket for Trinidad and Tobago, and for Warwickshire. In April 1994, he broke the world individual Test batting record with an innings of 375 against England, and 50 days later, he broke the world record for an individual innings in first-class cricket with an unbeaten 501 for Warwickshire against Durham. His Test record, set in St John's, Antigua, beat the previous best of 365 not out by Garfield Sobers in 1958, though it was subsequently beaten by Australia's Matthew Hayden. Lara regained the world record in April 2004 (again in St John's, Antigua), scoring 400 not out v. England in the fourth Test. In November 2005, he went past Allan Border's total of 11,174 runs to become Test cricket's most prolific scorer. He has also captained his country in three separate spells.
