Government Sweden is a constitutional monarchy, with a multiparty parliamentary executive. Its formal head of state is the hereditary monarch. The constitution is based on four fundamental laws – the Instrument of Government Act 1809, the Act of Succession 1810, the Freedom of the Press Act 1949, and the Fundamental Law on Freedom of Expression 1991 – and the Riksdag Act 1974.
