Definition: Great Britain from A Glossary of UK Government and Politics

The largest island of the British Isles. Lying to the northwest of continental Europe, it makes up the larger part of the territory of the United Kingdom (UK). It is the largest island in Europe, the eighth largest in the world. It is surrounded by over 100 smaller islands and islets. The UK Government officially distinguishes between Great Britain and the United Kingdom, but the former term (or more often simply Britain) is widely used as a synonym for the latter.
